Choose Your Sessions

  • The human body is complicated and we frequently see new opinions from medicine about the way or bodies affect our thinking emotions and behavior. How should we in biblical counseling decide which of these new medical observations are useful and which are not as we counsel. This lecture proposes a framework to help in that process.

  • Often the counselor will be meeting with someone suffering from a medical illness. This can be overwhelming without a medical background. This session will equip with what they need for this suffering counselee.

  • Understanding the Medical and Spiritual challenges, Bipolar Disorder has become a widely diagnosed problem with both physical and spiritual implications. It is important to understand both when counseling those who come with the label.

  • In many states marijuana is legal for medical and recreational purposes. How should one approach marijuana use with their counselee?

  • We all want to have healthier, stronger, and closer relationships. But why are healthy relationships important? Relationships aren’t just a perk to life on earth, they are a fundamental aspect of our identity as those created in the image of a triune God. What’s more, as our relationships grow and deepen they give us a taste of what eternity in perfect communion with God and his Church will be like. God wants to strengthen our relationships not just so we can enjoy this life more, but so that we may be spurred on and inspired by the promise of the life to come.

  • Relationships provide an invitation to know and enjoy another human being through their whole story. But our brokenness moves us beyond the category of sin, which provides opportunity to fully understand and cultivate compassion for others. In this session, Dave will explore the brokenness beyond sin that can shapes our identity and personhood.

  • We will examine Philippians 4:10-14 and discover Paul’s journey to developing contentment. We will trace his process and learn how to cultivate his process into an avenue of developing contentment in our relationships.

  • Life delivers complexity. Growing older together leaves many situations open-ended. People sin against us and we sin against each other. Things don’t resolve. We crave closure, sometimes to point of distraction—even idolatry. Healthy marriages understand that closure, at least in this life, is overrated. We gain the kind of closure that transforms by looking not to the present, but to the beauty of the past (at the cross) and to the hope of the future (the new heavens and new earth).

  • Many parents aren’t prepared for the challenges of raising children, especially in the chaotic world in which we presently live. Questions which will be addressed include: Why do children turn out the way that they do? What influence can we have on them as they get older? How can we love wayward children? What is the greatest temptation parents face, especially with their adult children. How can we keep our faith when our children turn away from the Lord?

  • The Church is the family of God. Like all families, it has all kings of people– mature and immature, just starting the race of faith and nearing the finish line, those called to lead and others called to follow. God’s Word enables us to thrive in the midst of diverse relationships in our Christian Family, and, ultimately, equips us to honor our Heavenly Father… together!

  • When I first started ministry over forty years ago, I never expected that I would see so many cases of divorce and remarriage within the church. Questions addressed will include: How do we answer those who say that Christians are never free to initiate divorce or to remarry after divorce? Are divorced people still married in God’s eyes? Why would God allow divorce and remarriage? Who regulates divorce and remarriage the government? the church? What sexual sin could be grounds for divorce? When can a neglected spouse consider themselves abandoned and thus free to divorce? Is abuse grounds for divorce? How can troubled marriages be rescued from divorce?

  • Gen. 3:22-23, 2 Cor. 5:8  This workshop will examine potential best practices when ministering to those who are dying and those who will be/are left behind with an emphasis on a biblical view of death.

  • Children of divorce have many conflicting thoughts and feelings at the breakup of their families. This session identifies feelings, circumstances and heart issues they experiece and how counselors can bring biblical hope to the children God brings into their ministries.

  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is being discussed often in society today. But what is PTSD? How are we as biblical counselors to address it? This workshop will help you understand the nature of the experience many people encounter after facing severe suffering. You will also be encouraged to learn how God’s Word brings hope, help, and healing to those disoriented by trauma.

  • In Proverbs 27:5-6 we have a description of 4 levels of relating: Open and Unloving, Closed and Loving, Open and Loving, and Closed and Unloving. This workshop demonstrates how we operate at these levels and gives us practical tools for developing Open and Loving Ways of Relating.

  • Bitterness can consume and blind us. Bitterness ruins relationships. Marriages are destroyed by bitterness. Churches can be devastated by roots of bitterness. This session will explore what the Bible says about bitterness and how to battle it for the sake of our relationships.

  • When a mother is diagnosed with postpartum depression, we may feel ill-equipped to offer meaningful care in Christ. How can we compassionately disciple her through such a multi-faceted problem? In this session, we'll explore five key aspects of a depressed mother's personhood and consider how to help her apply biblical wisdom to her lived experience.

  • Guiding a couple in restoring their marriage after adultery can seem like a daunting task. The good news is that the Good News can make this process clear. By the Spirit, a marriage CAN come back from adultery and you will cherish the front row seat, if you'll brave the course.

  • Bipolar Disorder has become a widely diagnosed problem with both physical and spiritual implications. It is important to understand both when counseling those who come with the label.

  • There are many situations in which team counseling can be effective. For example, it usually ideal when a husband and wife can work together counseling married or engaged couples. Team counseling has many advantages but is also can bring challenges. Team counseling is like a dance in which the counselors need to learn to work well together by reading each other’s signals and being able to spontaneously adjust to the flow of the situation. What if one partner is more capable (or willing) than the other? How can the partners show respect to one another. We will offer wisdom we have learned from many years of experience to help challenge and equip couples to counsel together.

  • What is anxiety? How should we understand it biblically? What do we do with the fact that Scripture speaks both positively (Phil 2:19-20) and negatively (Phil 4:4-9)? Understanding the
difference between ungodly fear, godly concern, and memory-triggered physical responses is key to helping people walk through their struggles with fear and appropriately applying the hope of the gospel.

  • In times of trouble, your church should be eager to weep with you (Rom 12:15), bear your burdens (Gal 6:2), and patiently walk with you toward Christ (1Thess 5:14). But where do you turn for help when the community that God called to care for you turns against you? When unrepentant sin against you is overlooked or even encouraged within a church culture, what should church members or church leaders do? In this workshop, we’ll explore how to counsel both pastors and lay members who have been hurt by their churches and who need help with understanding their pain and navigating next steps.

  • If we're going to help people through their pain, we can't assume they know how to speak to God in the midst of it. Complaint comes naturally to us all, but biblical lament is a language to be learned in the context of fellowship. In this session, we'll examine the goal and grace of biblical lament, review a practical approach to teaching lament, and consider the benefits of working through these pain-pressed prayers during a counseling session.

  • This workshop will focus on awareness of potential things to consider when counseling individuals who live daily with a chronic illness. Additionally, this workshop will provide various approaches to help individuals process the daily struggle of living with a chronic illness and will provide insights into how to help a person rest during times of debilitation and work during times of "good" physical strength. Insights will be drawn from my own daily battle with Lupus & Rheumatoid Arthritis.

  • The art of asking questions involves framing inquiries that promote curiosity, encourage thoughtful responses, and foster meaningful connections with others. In this workshop, we will explore the power of righteous inquiry for in its simplicity lies the potential for eternal impact, fostering relationships in ways that echo beyond the confines of time.

  • Every church family must have a culture that moves toward the hurting, that gently bears their burdens, and that patiently walks with them toward Christ. Sadly, this type of care is often only available within a biblical counseling ministry. When care and counsel is limited to a formal ministry it can inadvertently communicate that God’s love for the hurting is small and often unavailable. In this workshop, we’ll explore how local churches can take steps toward building a biblical counseling culture where each member seeks to display Christ’s care to one another.

  • Bearing each other’s burdens will always be done best when we share the load and counsel in community. A counseling ally is a spiritual friend or mentor in someone's life who accompanies the counselee to counseling. This workshop will explain the value of using allies in counseling and practical information on how to incorporate them into your counseling ministry.

  • One of the lessons we find in Job is the importance of silence and presence to those we care for. In an overly communicative society, we can often be tempted to speak when we really have nothing to say. Joel will help us understand when to stay silent in the counseling process and how God can use our silence to speak powerfully to those who are hurting.

  • The art of listening is a timeless and invaluable skill that plays a pivotal role in nurturing relationships for eternal purposes. Drawing on biblical references, we learn that listening is not merely a mundane act but a profound expression of love, patience, and understanding. By embodying these qualities through attentive listening, we can contribute to the eternal significance of their relationships, creating bonds that withstand the tests of time. As we heed the biblical wisdom that encourages us to be quick to hear and slow to speak, we embark on a journey toward deeper connections and eternal fulfillment in our relationships.

  • Children struggle with angry responses to authority and difficult circumstances. This talk identifies anger in different stages of a child's life. Suggestions are given to help parents shepherd their children toward wisdom.

  • The Bible can be somewhat confusing on the issue of trusting people. Some verses tell us not to trust in human relationships and others tell us to trust human relationships. This workshop will harmonize these verses and provide us with practical insights into the ways we are to trust and not trust in human relationships.

  • This session looks at problems in the medical world that lead to physical harm of those that want to transgender, and a biblical approach that gives hope for family members, friends and counselors.

  • Why did God create sex? How does the whole of Scripture reveal God’s purposes for sexual intimacy within marriage? In this session we will take a survey of the entire Bible, examining how God has revealed his purpose and intentions for sexual intimacy in marriage from Genesis to Revelation. We will also briefly identify some key practical principles for married couples and those counseling them.

  • Ecclesiastes usually receives a bad rap as a negative book about the meaninglessness of life. On the contrary, Ecclesiastes is about joy in this fleeting life. The perspective in Ecclesiastes can transform our view of everything in this life, including marriage and work. In this session, Ecclesiastes will be presented as a powerful tool in the counselor’s toolbox to help counselee’s embrace the joy of this fleeting life.
